Getting Ready for Your First Hunt

Once you decide to try this, a quiet list of worries shows up. Do I need a rifle? Do I need a pile of gear I cannot afford? Am I too out of shape, or too old, to keep up?

The short answer to all of it is no. You do not need to own a gun. You do not need the gear the catalogs sell you. And you do not need to be an athlete, or young, to have a good first hunt in Montana.

This section takes those worries one at a time, plainly. It explains why most of the gear you think you need is not the point, how the three hunting seasons differ and which one suits a beginner, what "getting ready" actually asks of your body, and what to bring — which is less than you fear.

One thing runs through all of it. For a beginner, the gear, the seasons, and the fitness question all have the same answer. A licensed Montana outfitter carries what you do not have, and plans the day around what you can do. You bring willingness. Your guide brings the rest.

Where this fits: this is the second hub of five. You came from Start Here, and this section leads into Choose Your Hunt.
